SAFETY
Initiatives contribute towards the city’s safety
Despite the Brazilian judicial system ordering the
State Government to be responsible for Public Safety, the
city of São Carlos has undertaken strategic planning in
order to integrate its efforts into the activities developed
within the city. Among these initiatives is the Integrated
Municipal Plan for Public Safety, which obtained
excellent results and a national spotlight.
Monitoring guarantees response and
preventative measures
The São Carlos Town Hall, with the aid of the
Secretary of Public Defense and the Municipal Guard,
maintains the installation of monitoring cameras within
São Carlos’ central region, as well as strategic spots and
locations scattered across the city. There are around 40
cameras currently operating, in addition to OCR radar
systems, all controlled by the Municipal Guard Center
and by Detecta, an intelligence service which integrates
data banks from São Paulo police accessed exclusively by
authorized agents.
Municipal Guard is allocated around
the whole city
Founded in 2001, the São Carlos Municipal Guard
is a part of the Integrated Municipal Plan for Public
Safety. The public servants were rigorously selected
through public examination and went through an
extensive training program, with the participation of
qualified professionals from the Public Safety field. The
corporation works on behalf of property, installations
and municipal services, as well as maintaining the
physical and moral integrity of its users and providing
them permanent vigilance.
Cameras and alarms in schools
Yet another investment was made in the
installation of cameras and new alarms within
the Municipal Centers for Child Education and
Basic Education Municipal Schools. This is modern
equipment which aids the Municipal Guard in
protecting public property, offering tranquility for
the entire school community and providing them
with real time information, which can be used in
safety procedures and deterring violence within the
school and its surrounding areas. The new system has
already received an investment of over R$ 3 million.
SOS ESCOLAR (SCHOOL SOS) – Another
important feature is SOS Escolar, a phone app
developed to help the schools that are a part of the
city’s educational network. The app was launched in
2019, in partnership with the Agência de Inovações
da Universidade Federal de São Carlos, to be used
by school principals in cases of extreme urgency or
situations which involve risk of death.
More safety even in rural areas
The State Government sent São Carlos two patrol
vehicles from the “Segurança no Campo” Program.
These are trucks equipped with winches, tow hitches,
radios and other equipment utilized in Municipal
Guard patrols.
