Experience from field and laboratory studies indicates that many of the ashes are a good
material as embankment layers and that some of them also suit as sub-base layer.
For other types of bottom ashes (i e except MSWI-ash and coal bottom ash) the
knowledge is limited. In many cases, limited technical investigations have been
performed, followed by a use of the ashes within landfill areas with good results.
However, it is not the same requirements for at material used within a landfill compared
to a use outside a landfill by an entrepreneur.
To be able to use bottom ashes on a routine basis and in the long run as a building
material, it is required that both the environmental and technical characteristics are very
well investigated. The parallel project by SGI takes care of the environmental aspects
and aims among other things to answer the question about what is meant by the
expressions significant and insignificant environmental risk. The result from the SGI
project and the result from the second part of this project mean that all the knowledge is
present to make it possible to make a complete quality insurance of ashes. The need of
increased quality insurance of ashes is also one of the findings from another
Värmeforsk-project “Prerequisities for an effective use of ashes in road construction”
[6].
