SOCIO-ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF ETIMESGUT: A RESEARCH
ABSTRACT
Ankara, Turkey's second largest city with its population, reflects dynamic features since its
population has reached to 5 million 500 thousand in 2017 and it was only around 3 million 800
thousand in 2000. Between 2004 and 2011, Ankara's economy grew by an average of 5,5%, it’s
share in total income varied by 8-9%. Even Ankara's share in the total Turkey’s income has
reached its highest level, when the effects of the global crisis were seen. The city was one of
the least shrunken (0,4%) one economically in 2009. Although the city holds 6% of Turkey's
total population in 2009, the share of national income continuously exceeds this ratio. So, it
can be considered as an important indicator of Ankara's dynamism.
In terms of R&D expenditures, the Western Anatolian Region (TR5), that includes Ankara,
also reached the highest level with 27,5%. The TR5 region was followed by the Eastern
Marmara (TR4) with 21,3% and Istanbul (TR1) Region with 20,3%. Regarding the number of
personnel working in the R & D field, there is a continuous increase in the TR5 region in Ankara.
22,5% of the active population in Ankara is regarded as a human resource working in science
and technology. Along with the advantages of being a capital city, the region has a significant
share in this trend, as it has a dynamic and educated workforce and a center of attraction for
qualified labor force. While the leading number of patent applications reached 738 in Istanbul,
according to the data of 2016, the number of patent registrations reached 214 in Ankara. So
that this city become second highest registered to patent in this year in Turkey. The increase
in household electricity consumption is generally considered as a prosperity increase. In this
regard, the average consumption in the provinces of Çankaya, Gölbaşı, Etimesgut and
Yenimahalle is at the highest level.
Etimesgut, one of the youngest province of Ankara (founded as a municipality in 1990), adds
to the dynamism of Ankara, as it is understood that historical works scattered around different
regions of the province are considered and many civilizations have been chosen as settlements
since the early ages. According to 2016 data, Etimesgut, which has the fifth largest population
after Çankaya, Keçiören, Yenimahalle and Mamak districts, is the fourth in terms of
demographics with a population density exceeding 1,000 people per square kilometers. In
2016, nearly five hundred fifty thousand people live in Etimesgut, where the female and male
