Nikole ili Miklavža. Njegov izgled potiče iz reklame za Koka
Kolu. U Sloveniji u prošlosti u tom obliku uopće nije bio poznat
- Slovenci so na Božić slavili dan rođenja Isusa Krista.
Kasnije u javnosti vjera nije bila željena pa tako nije bilo dozvoljeno
javno slaviti Božić u bilom kojem obliku. Jedini mitološko
dobročinitelj koje je komunistička vlast dozvoljavala
bio je Djeda Mraz uvožen iz Rusije. Poslije raspada Jugoslavije
dolaze svi američki komercijalni praznici uključujući Santa
Claus. U posljednjim godinama Božicek je omiljen među
ateistima a Sveti Miklavž među slovenskim vjernicima (Djeda
krzna.
• Pratnja: Prate ga patuljci.
• Prijevoz: Dolazi sanjkama il ga po zraku vuku sjeverni jeleni.
SAINT MIKLAVŽ OR SAINT NICHOLAS
Miklavž is one of the three good December grandfathers who
give presents to children. He is regarded as one of the most
popular saints and a miracle maker. The celebrations moved
from Europe also to America where he got a completely new
image. The American Santa Claus or the Slovenian Božiček
is actually St. Miklavž (Nicholas).
On the eve of St. Miklavž’ s name day (from 5 to 6 December)
the children would usually put plates on the window
shelves. In the past St. Miklavž brought the children wall
nuts, apples, dry fruit and cakes. Today, children expect different
presents but still they receive also sweets, chocolate
Miklavž and little devils.
Every year Miklavž and his escort – angels and devils – goes
from village to village and town to town, from house to
house visiting children. His loudest companions are devils.
They look horrible and children are sometimes afraid
of them. This is precisely their task – to scare and punish
naughty children who should be better in the following
year. Miklavž gives presents to good children whereas the
naughty ones are punished.
• Home: Miklavž is a saint and comes from heaven.
• Date: He gives presents to children on December 6 in
the morning.
• Clothes: Miklavž was a bishop, so he wears bishop’ s liturgical
clothes, the bishop’ s mitre on the head and the
pastoral staff in his hand;
• Escort: He is accompanied by angels and devils
• Transport: Miklavž comes on foot or on a sleigh (but it is
not drawn by rain deer but common horses).
DEDEK MRAZ – GRANDFATHER “FROST”
“Dedek Mraz” came to our country in the communism era at
the time when the traditional Saint Miklavž and the American
Santa Claus were prohibited (or at lease undesired)
Grandfather Frost has his origins in Russian legends and
loves all the children without making any differences. All
children therefore receive the same presents.
The main characteristics of Grandfather Frost are:
• Home: under the Triglav - Slovenia.
• Date: He gives presents to children before the Ney Year’s
Eve (especially at home) or in the morning of the New
Year’s Day.
• Clothes: He wears a sheep’s fur coat with Slovene ornaments,
has a walking stick in his hand and the doormouse
fur hat on the head
• Escort: Usually he is unaccompanied but sometimes he
comes in the company of dwarves.
• Transport: He travels on a sleigh (drawn by horses).
BOŽIČEK – SANTA CLAUS
Santa Claus is a modern mythological personality who gives
presents to children in the night before Christmas( from 24
to ). The image of Santa was developed in the United States
of America based on Scandinavian heritage regarding the
celebrations of Saint Nicholas. His image is the result of the
Coca Cola promotion campaign. In Slovenia Santa Claus as
such was not even known in the past – at Christmas time the
Slovenians celebrated the birth of Jesus Christ. Later the
religion became undesired in public therefore Christmas
festivities were not allowed in any form. The only mythological
benefactor permitted by the communist authorities
was the Russian imported Grandfather Frost. After the disintegration
of the former Yugoslavia all the American commercial
holidays came to Slovenia, including Santa Claus.
In the recent years Santa Claus has become popular particularly
with atheists whereas Saint Miklavž is appreciated by
the Slovenian believers (Father Frost is remembered only in
schools and kindergartens).
Santa Claus differs from Miklavž and Grandfather Frost especially
as regards the following characteristics:
• Home: Santa Claus lives on the North Pole (extreme
north of Scandinavia
• Date: Santa brings presents to children in the Christmas
morning – 25 December
• Clothes: He is dressed like a dwarf – red clothes with
white fur bordure.
• Escort: He is accompanied by dwarves.
• Transport: He travels on a sleigh drawn by rain deer in
the air.
