Fl<strong>in</strong>tshire’s HeritageFrontierCountryMoel ArthurTrimley Hall, LlanfynyddPlas Trimley, LlanfynyddBorder LandsFl<strong>in</strong>tshire is remarkably rich <strong>in</strong> historicalrema<strong>in</strong>s, simply because it has beenfrontier country for centuries.Strategically placed Iron Age hillforts,such as Penycloddiau and Moel y Gaer,dom<strong>in</strong>ate the skyl<strong>in</strong>e of the Clwydiansand Halkyn Mounta<strong>in</strong>.The Romans marched through the areafor more than three hundred years,leav<strong>in</strong>g numerous rema<strong>in</strong>s.Parts of Offa's and Wat's Dykes can stillbe seen. These once massive earthbanks and ditches were constructed bythe Saxons <strong>in</strong> the 8th century to markthe boundary with Wales.Fl<strong>in</strong>tshire is dotted with castles builtdur<strong>in</strong>g the ongo<strong>in</strong>g power strugglebetween the Welsh pr<strong>in</strong>ces andNorman k<strong>in</strong>gs. Ewloe and Caergwrlewere Welsh castles but Fl<strong>in</strong>t andHawarden were Norman. Impos<strong>in</strong>gFl<strong>in</strong>t Castle was the first of Edward I'sstr<strong>in</strong>g of castles along the Welsh coast,built dur<strong>in</strong>g his first onslaught <strong>in</strong>toWales <strong>in</strong> 1277. It was impregnableand, although besieged, was nevertaken, unlike Hawarden that wascaptured <strong>in</strong> 1282.Fl<strong>in</strong>tshire was important spiritually too.St W<strong>in</strong>efride's Well was one of themost revered places of Christianpilgrimage <strong>in</strong> Europe and the nowru<strong>in</strong>ed Bas<strong>in</strong>gwerk Abbey was wealthyand <strong>in</strong>fluential.
