Fl<strong>in</strong>tshire’s HeritageAn Industrial PastLower Cotton Mill, GreenfieldY Fel<strong>in</strong> Gotwm Isaf, MaesglasThe underly<strong>in</strong>g rocks and the navigableDee Estuary brought <strong>in</strong>dustry andwealth to rural Fl<strong>in</strong>tshire.Rich ve<strong>in</strong>s of lead, silver and z<strong>in</strong>c with<strong>in</strong>Halkyn's limestone were m<strong>in</strong>ed<strong>in</strong>tensively, leav<strong>in</strong>g the scars of shafts,spoil and old roads on its landscape.Long-disused limekilns once turned therock itself <strong>in</strong>to a useful fertilizer.Copper, brought ma<strong>in</strong>ly from Anglesey,comb<strong>in</strong>ed with power from a faststream and access to the coast, providedthe impetus for Greenfield Valley.It quickly became the cradle of theIndustrial Revolution <strong>in</strong> North Wales,with mills produc<strong>in</strong>g metal wire, cotton,brass pots and pans.Valuable coal and oil deposits at Po<strong>in</strong>tof Ayr, Coed Talon and Llanfynydd gaverise to a local network of railways andfactories, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the magnificentviaducts at Ffrith and Cefn-y-bedd.Thick deposits of clay were found underKnowle Hill at Buckley, upon whichgrew a successful pottery and brickmak<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>dustry.
