However, the analysis also showed some signs of domestic aspects. Also, the framing of the
articles was dominated by a conflict frame, where the EU was seen as a source of conflicts
both in the member states and in the world outside the EU.
Furthermore, the analysis suggests that the level of Europeanisation in the print media depends
on the topics and the countries covered. It seems that larger countries receive more coverage
in both the EU-articles and the European articles, whereas the smaller countries are largely
ignored in the EU-articles, but receive some attention in the wider European articles.
The thesis seeks explanations for these findings at several levels – e.g. the working methods of
journalists and the international and European developments.
Overall, the amount of European journalism has decreased over the period – the largest
decrease being within the EU-journalism.
Therefore, in regard to the EU-journalism it seems that the qualitative Europeanisation of the
Danish print media is increasing, while the quantitative Europeanisation is decreasing.
Whether this is good or bad in regard to the democratic deficit of the EU depends on ones
point of view. If the European Union is understood from a perspective of a minimum
democracy such as a procedural or competitive democracy, Europeanisation of the national
print media does not affect nor improve the democracy. Is the EU instead viewed as a
participatory or deliberative democracy, the lack of Europeanisation would definitely weaken
the democratic system and create a democratic deficit.
Therefore, the gravity of the findings in this thesis depends on the normative understanding of
the EU as a democratic institution.
