Simulating innovative multifunctional reinforcement
technology for masonry buildings
This project is focused on the development of both, a
theoretical and a numerical scheme for simulating the
behaviour of a multifunctional technical textile. This
intelligent “seismic wallpaper” consists of a multiaxial
textile structure made of glass and polymeric
textiles, featuring embedded fiber optics sensors. The
composite thus obtained is multi-functional in the
sense that it reinforces the structure and, at the same
time, the integrated sensors provide localized and
distributed static and dynamic measurements before,
during and after a seismic event. The “seismic wallpaper”
has been laboratory tested on single masonry
walls and has recently been used to reinforce a twostorey
stone building.
The full-cover reinforced building has been tested
in shaking table tests at the European Centre for
Training and Research in Earthquake Engineering
(Eucentre) within the “Polyfunctional Technical
Textiles for Reinforcement of Masonry Structures”
(Polymast) initiative under the “Seismic Engineering
Research Infrastructures for European Synergies”
(Series) project.
This work will use the experimental results 1) as
benchmarks in order to correctly identify the textile
material behaviour. To this end, an inverse problem
formulation is implemented combining an evolutionary
method (Genetic Algorithms) and an FEMbased
analytical model for the solution of the forward
problem.
Polytect project.
