New container train connection between
Hamburg and Budapest
In July EUROGATE Intermodal (EGIM) launched a
new train connection from Hamburg via the Bavarian
Port of Regensburg to the Budapest Free Port of
Csepel (Hungary). On the Hamburg–Regensburg–
Budapest corridor, EGIM offers two departures
per week with a transport capacity of 96 TEUs per
container train. The transit time is approximately
27 hours. Demand for transport services to and
from Hungary has risen sharply over the past three
years. In the first half of 2010, EGIM recorded
growth of 30 percent in this segment. Today,
Hungary is already the third most important shipping
transport partner of the Port of Regensburg,
which as a member of the bayernhafen Gruppe has
developed into an international logistics hub for the
transport of cargo between western and southeastern
Europe. The EGIM transport system based
on container trains is distinguished from other
systems by its particularly high degree of reliability.
In the bayernhafen Gruppe, EGIM has also gained
a competent logistics partner, enabling it to offer
its customers tailor-made transport solutions.
“The new Bavarian Port of Regensburg destination
represents genuine added value for our rail freight
services between the German seaports and Hungary.
The Bavarian Port of Regensburg is a tri-modal
location with optimum road, rail and inland waterway
connections as well as 87 hectares of land
available for settlement. That makes this location
so attractive – also because with some 7 million
tonnes of freight per year it has one of the highest
handling volumes among the Danube ports,” says
Lars Hedderich, managing director of EUROGATE
Intermodal GmbH. “The new rail service and the
eastward expansion of our logistics network
have enabled us to implement a further important
building block in our networking strategy.
The link with Budapest and the potential that
freight services to and from Hungary hold have
been one of our business focuses for some time
already,” points out Alexander Ochs, proxy holder
and head of the bayernhafen combined transport
division at bayernhafen GmbH & Co. KG.
