Railway company boxXpress.de in Hamburg
is observing its tenth birthday this year,
and is organising a huge anniversary celebration
on 10 September 2010 to mark the occasion.
That’s reason enough to cast a look over the
history of the founding of the company.
The boxXpress.de project started in June of the year
2000. The plan was to bundle container transport
between the two German sea ports of Bremer -
haven and Hamburg, and the surrounding country,
under that name. As the following ten years
came to show, the concept took off. Today
boxXpress.de GmbH continues to provide
freight solutions for the three shareholders,
transporting containers that arrive in the ports
by ship and are destined for the inland, or are
to be transported from the inland to the terminals
for shipping by sea. The shareholders of
boxXpress.de GmbH are Eurogate Intermodal
GmbH, Rail & Intermodal Terminal Holding
B.V. and TX Logistik AG.
Around 40 employees currently work in Hamburg
Waltershof to ensure that the containers reliably
reach their destination, and around 100 more
employees in various service providers across
Germany. The fleet comprises 24 electric locomotives
and approx. 650 container transport
cars. boxXpress puts great value in using exclusively
electricity-powered locomotives, in order to
keep CO2 emissions as low as possible and to
protect the environment.
The volume of freight, which in the beginning
was just 1,800 TEU per week, has grown over
the years. The current goal of boxXpress is to
achieve a freight volume of 500,000 TEU annually.
The foundation of this growth has been the
constant expansion of the network. Block trains
generally cover commercial regions in southern
Germany, including destinations such as
Mannheim, Munich, Nuremberg, Regensburg,
Stuttgart, Ulm and, since April of this year,
Frankfurt/Main. Since 2005, boxXpress has even
been operating on an international level with a
connection to Budapest. New routes are regularly
examined, both domestic and foreign, in order
to continue to improve the range of efficient
transport solutions.
boxXpress.de GmbH can proudly claim to make
a significant contribution to getting transport
traffic off the streets and onto the rails.
