Was früher schon als perfekter
What may be the attraction of reviving past things? As the fashion
branch announced the revival of leggings nobody really wanted to
remember them at first. Since those weren’t good news to all contemporaries
who had already had to witness once how the body-hugging leg
dress can broaden itself. But today they are part of the daily town image
and the one time “horror” has become habitual. So it is probably normal
in fashion, too, that a brand is more or less popular again at times. But at
the moment those who have devoted themselves to the 90s retro trend are
at the front of the race. Namely brands that were already hyped then are
celebrating a big comeback. Especially sports-wear legends from before
which are emblazoned with old school logo t-shirts, tracksuit bottoms,
training jackets and oversize sweaters are causing a sensation for the
kids.
But retro and vintage have been the sales drivers in retail for a
while. Scene shops profit from the hype so some limited sports-wear classics
are already sold before they reach the shops. The more than 60 year
old sports brands like Ellesse, Fila and Champion which were once only
worn by athletes are now spreading in online shops like Asos, Zalando
and others. Ellesse was one of the first labels to prominently emblazon its
logo on jumpers, dresses, jackets and trousers. What used to already be
seen as a perfect mix of functionality of sports clothing and the coolness
of street wear is now dropping like a bomb in a newly interpreted look.
The sports-wear label Fila, founded in Italy in 1911, also wants a slice of the
cake. For a good reason for the bestsellers of those times’ looks have barely
changed. Sporty, oversized and emblazoned with a large logo they
perfectly match the 90s revival and have thereby wonderfully remained
true to themselves. Today they are worn by pop stars like Rihanna, Kanye
West, bloggers and fashionistas around the globe. Also an Italian brand,
also known from the 90s, also in again: Kappa. By the way the logo pictures
a couple that is leaning together. It is supposed to symbolise the mutual
support of men and women – a message that is to be conveyed with the
new Kappa Authentic product line again. The new Revival collection will
be presented at the Seek in Berlin for the first time.
sportFACHHANDEL Fashion already spoke to Kappa about the new collection
in advance (pages 46 to 47).
But not only the Italians are jumping up on the 90s band wagon. In 1933
the French tennis player and inventor René Lacoste who, due to his fighting
spirit on the tennis court was nicknamed “The Crocodile”, revolutionised
the world of sports-wear as he created the Lacoste L.12.12 polo shirt.
The petit piqué weaving enabled unlimited movability for the 30s’ tennis
players. The polo shirt developed itself as a brand’s icon and became a
worldwide symbol of French elegance and timeless style. Up to today. And
that despite its design has barely changed since 1933. Lacoste now puts the
message of the brand having remained true to itself from the beginning
into a romantic film in which the responsible agency BETC Paris puts the
love at first sight in scene as a travel through time. Always part of that and
always up-to-date the famous Lacoste L12.12. polo shirt.
