PEOPLE
stärker in Richtung Urban Outdoor
VP GLOBAL SALES & MARKETING
ALCHEMY EQUIPMENT
Performance Driven Style
The New Zealand brand Alchemy Equipment presented its collection on the ISPO in Munich
for the first time. Since then, the brand with the – as the New Zealanders themselves
call it – “performance driven style”, has been taking off on the German market. Frank
Spiewak, VP Global Sales & Marketing, talked about the hitherto course of the season and
explains why the term “urban outdoor” does not really fit with the brand image.
Alchemy Equipment entered the German
market in the last season. How did the
season go for you? Quite satisfying! There was
a great deal of interest, but not all retailers dared
to abandon well-trodden paths. However, the
awareness that something has to change is existent
and this is beneficial for us, since we offer a
new category with our performance driven style.
Do you think that the category “urban
outdoor” will grow in the future? We think
that the term “urban outdoor” is quite awkward,
because it stands for outdoor clothes designed in
an “urban” way. It has already turned out to be an
aberration. It is not the correct way to just change
existing things. The consumers see through
this. We should instead focus on fulfilling the
customer’s demand for function in combination
with style. In our opinion, the category of highly
functional clothes for everyday life has a great
potential, no matter how you call it - urban tech or
our performance driven style.
What is new in spring/summer 18? Do
you offer something the retailers can look
forward to? We took a great step forward with
the new range for s/s 18. The entire line is built on
three “capsule ideas”: TailoredTech, Natured-
Luxe and AthLuxe. The focus lies on classic and
modern cuts as well as on technical/functional
and luxurious/natural materials, for example
our organic cotton, silk and merino wool. Above
that, we revised our successful backpack and
bag category and complemented the line with
new styles.
