in die Datenbank eingegeben. Bei rund 1200 Zootieren, zu denen keine<br />
Angaben über das Herkunftsland vorhanden sind, wurde die Herkunft ebenso<br />
als unbekannt eingegeben.<br />
The geographic origin of the spec<strong>im</strong>ens (Fig. 7, Table 4) is on one side the consequence<br />
of historical acquisitions (e.g. spec<strong>im</strong>ens from Brazil), on the other side of a strategy to<br />
concentrate collecting on the fauna of Switzerland.<br />
For South America, the E.A. Goeldi collection from Brazil with over 4400 individuals is<br />
the most <strong>im</strong>portant part. Several smaller batches were added by various private donators.<br />
The <strong>im</strong>portance of Asian spec<strong>im</strong>ens was only recognized while analysing the holdings for<br />
this overview. The African fauna, despite its conspicuous representation in the exhibition<br />
(dioramas with African game) has only two noteworthy samples, the von Wattenwyl and<br />
the Guggisberg collection, both from Kenya. The Nearctic and the Australian regions are<br />
poorly represented; among the Australian spec<strong>im</strong>ens, however, some 250 spec<strong>im</strong>ens from<br />
John Gould are remarkable (Güntert et al. 2005, 2006).<br />
3800 spec<strong>im</strong>ens are without any indication of locality and are therefore not attributed<br />
to a continent. Even in the case of endemic species the geographic origin has not been<br />
deducted from the recent distribution. The same rule is applied to some 1200 an<strong>im</strong>als from<br />
zoological gardens: If no information about their country of origin is available, the provenance<br />
