Glegg William E. (1879–1952)<br />
Britischer Ornithologe, lebte um 1937 in Richmond, Surrey.Zu dieser Zeit Eingang<br />
der Sammlung ins NMBE, als Geschenk vermittelt durch C.A.W. Guggisberg*<br />
welcher Mitte der 30er-Jahre 1939 in London studiert hatte.Autor verschiedener<br />
avifaunistischer Werke: Vögel von Essex, von Middlesex und der Camargue (F).<br />
Glegg hatte enge Kontakte zum Tring <strong>Museum</strong> (GB), in welchem er nach 1945 die<br />
Eiersammlung ordnete.Selber war er offenbar nie in Südostasien; die Herkunft<br />
seiner Exemplare (z.T.datiert zwischen 1891–1921, einige aus dem Raffles <strong>Museum</strong>)<br />
ist daher nicht bekannt.<br />

the avifauna of Essex, Middlesex and the Camargue.After 1945 he worked in the egg collection<br />
of Tring <strong>Museum</strong>. 114 South Asian bird skins were donated to the NMBE through<br />
the intermediary action of C.A.W.Guggisberg*, studying at that t<strong>im</strong>e in London.Glegg h<strong>im</strong>self<br />
was never in Southeast Asia, therefore the precise provenance of the skins, some with<br />
Raffles <strong>Museum</strong> labels, is not known.<br />
Total = 129 Aves: bird skins “from the Malayan Archipelago”, collected 1891–1921 (entry<br />
1937).<br />

Von Schlatt bei Nesslau <strong>im</strong> Obertoggenburg TG.Studium der Zoologie in Leipzig<br />
und Jena, Assistent bei Ernst Haeckel.Promotion 1884 an der Universität Jena.Ab<br />
1884 Kurator für Wirbeltiere in Rio de Janeiro.Ab 1889 als Privatgelehrter in der<br />
«Colonia Alpina», in der Serra do Orgãos (Orgelgebirge) gelegen.Verfasste mehrere<br />
Werke über die Fauna Brasiliens.Wurde 1894 zum Direktor des <strong>Museum</strong>s in<br />
Parà (heute Belém) berufen, das er zu Weltruf führte und das heute noch seinen<br />
Namen trägt.Kehrte 1907 definitiv in die Schweiz zurück und nahm Wohnsitz in<br />
<strong>Bern</strong>.Ab 1908 bis zu seinem Tod 1917 a.o. Professor für Zoologie an der Universität<br />
<strong>Bern</strong> (Morgenthaler 1993).Die <strong>im</strong> NMBE befindlichen Sammlungen (einschliesslich<br />
der 9662 wirbellosen Tiere: 14 345 Exemplare) stammen zum Teil aus<br />
seiner Privatsammlung, zum Teil sind sie ein Dauerdepositum des Museu Paraense<br />
Emílio Goeldi (MPEG) in Belém.<br />
Born in Schlatt near Nesslau TG.Studied zoology in Leipzig and Jena, assistant to Ernst<br />
Haeckel, Ph.D.in 1884 from University of Jena.In 1884 he became curator of the Vertebrate<br />
Section at the museum in Rio de Janeiro.From 1889 to 1894 he lived at the “Colonia Alpina”<br />
in the Serra do Orgãos.Author of several publications on the fauna of Brazil.In 1894 he<br />
was appointed director of the museum of Pará (nowadays Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi)<br />
in Belém, which gained worldwide attention and still bears his name.In 1907 he returned<br />
to Switzerland.From 1908 until his death in 1917 he taught as a professor of zoology at the<br />
University of <strong>Bern</strong>.The Goeldi collection in <strong>Bern</strong> comprises 14345 spec<strong>im</strong>ens (including<br />
<strong>Wirbeltiersammlungen</strong> <strong>im</strong> NMBE<br />
