The following list of collectors and donators is the result of a rather arbitrary selection<br />
from more than 2000 names stored in our database.Criteria for their inclusion stem from a<br />
number of factors, firstly, it is based on the number of spec<strong>im</strong>ens collected for or donated<br />
to the museum (usually 50).Secondly, the essential role each person had concerning<br />
either the development of the museum or the promotion of science at the museum.More<br />
comprehensive information about the persons and institutions mentioned below is noted<br />
in the “Basisdokumentation” and available upon request.<br />
A problematic issue is the distinction between “collector” and “donator”, for in the majority<br />
of cases the old sources do not specify whether a certain spec<strong>im</strong>en was actually collected<br />
by a certain person or acquired from some source.In the database the “donator” is<br />
often the most recent owner of an item, regardless whether it was donated or sold to the<br />
museum.S<strong>im</strong>ilarly, trading of spec<strong>im</strong>ens between museums – in former t<strong>im</strong>es a common<br />
practice to acquire species missing in a collection – has not always been recorded in the catalogues.<br />

Airoldi Jean-Pierre (*1945)<br />
Zoologiestudium in <strong>Bern</strong> (1967–73), Dissertation über Arvicola terrestris * (Abschluss<br />
1977).Seit 1979 Lektor für Biologie an der Universität <strong>Bern</strong>.Das gut dokumentierte<br />
Material übergab er 1977 dem NMBE; es stammt aus dem westlichen<br />
Mittelland (VD), dem Jura (VD, NE) und den Alpen (Val d’Illiez, VS) und wurde<br />
zwischen 1973–76 gesammelt.<br />
Zoologist, studies at the University of <strong>Bern</strong>, 1977 Ph.D. thesis on Arvicola terrestris*.Lecturer<br />
in biology at the University of <strong>Bern</strong> since 1979.Donated his well-documented collection<br />
to the NMBE in 1977.<br />
Total = 593: well-documented collection of Arvicola terrestris from 3 different regions of<br />
Switzerland (western part of Plateau, Jura, and Valais), including 230 skulls with skins,<br />
7 skeletons, 227 skulls, 41 pairs of fluid-preserved eyeballs, 83 nests, 54 cached food<br />
samples, collected between 1973–76.<br />

Autobahnpolizei / Autobahnwerkhof des Kantons <strong>Bern</strong> / Highway Maintenance Base<br />
Der Autobahnwerkhof Wankdorf (bei <strong>Bern</strong>) sowie die Autobahnpolizei sind als<br />
Donatoren von Greifvögeln, Eulen sowie Säugetieren, v.a.aus den Wintermonaten,<br />
aufgeführt.Viele Eingänge sind allerdings unter dem Namen einzelner Mitarbeiter<br />
(Ramseier, De Monti, Gasser) eingetragen.<br />
Highway Patrol / Highway Maintenance Base <strong>Bern</strong>.Several policemen and operators are<br />
credited for donating traffic vict<strong>im</strong>s, especially diurnal raptors, owls and mammals, collected<br />
mainly during the winter months.<br />
Total = 89: 18 Mammalia, 71 Aves, mainly from the Canton of <strong>Bern</strong> (1972–78).<br />
