Clogs and Rubber Boots
Strongly smelling plastic footwear, such as clogs
and rubber boots, are being increasingly faulted by
government inspectorates. Consumer awareness has
also increased, in keeping with the motto: “Avoid
anything that smells of chemistry.”
While acetophenone and 2-phenyl-2-propanol are held
accountable for the conspicuous odour of EVA clogs,
blame is assigned to the high content of 2-mercaptobenzothiazole
(2-MBT) used in rubber production in the case
of rubber boots.
The presence of these two strongly smelling substances
in large and odour-relevant amounts in EVA clogs indicates
departure from good manufacturing practice. The
German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (Bundesinstitut
für Risikobewertung – BfR) therefore recommends
that consumers avoid EVA products having an unpleasant
odour because a health hazard cannot be excluded.
Numerous manufacturers of EVA clogs have meanwhile
reacted to these identified faults and modified their production
process to minimise formation of acetophenone
and 2-phenyl-2-propanol.
Since the substances acetophenone and 2-phenyl-2propanol
have a strong odour they are readily ‘detected’

EVA-Clogs und Gummistiefel im Visier
der Überwachungsämter
Immer häufiger werden geruchsauffällige Kunststoff-Schuhe,
wie Clogs und Gummistiefel, von
Überwachungsämtern beanstandet. Auch der Verbraucher
ist sensibel geworden, denn für ihn gilt:
was nach Chemie riecht, davon lass lieber die Finger.
Während bei den EVA-Clogs die Substanzen Acetophenon
und 2-Phenyl-2-propanol für die Geruchsauffälligkeit
verantwortlich gemacht werden, wird bei Gummistiefeln
der hohe Gehalt von 2-Mercaptobenzothiazol (2-MBT)
beanstandet, das bei der Gummiproduktion zum Einsatz
kommt.
Sind diese beiden geruchsintensiven Substanzen in großen
und geruchsrelevanten Mengen in EVA-Clogs enthalten,
widerspricht das der guten Herstellerpraxis. Das Bundesinstitut
für Risikobewertung (BfR) empfiehlt deshalb,
unangenehm riechende EVA Produkte zu meiden, da
ein gesundheitliches Risiko zurzeit nicht ausgeschlossen
werden kann. Mittlerweile haben viele Hersteller von
EVA-Clogs auf diese Beanstandungen reagiert und ihren
Produktionsprozess so umgestellt, dass die Bildung von
Acetophenon und 2-Phenyl-2-propanol auf ein Minimum
reduziert wird.
