iogas yield and the methane content of the biogas, thus
leading to increased generation of electric power and
heat. The resulting sludge is then dewatered.
Magnesium ammonium phosphate (MAP) will then be
precipitated from the sludge water by addition of magnesium
salts, initially on a laboratory scale within the framework
of the present research project and in the future,
provided that preliminary studies are successful, on a an
industrial scale at the Pirmasens sewage treatment plant.
“In contrast to MAP precipitation in the sludge, this process
utilises a crystallisation step and affords a largely dry,
high-purity product which is much more readily marketable
than phosphorus-enriched sludge, both in the agricultural
sector and in industry,” explains Benjamin Pacan,
Department Manager at PFI.
The phosphorus-depleted water is subsequently returned
to the sewage treatment plant, significantly reducing the
phosphorus burden. The sludge separated off prior to
MAP precipitation, which still contains residual phosphorus,
will continue to be used for agricultural purposes.
