<strong>Traditional</strong> <strong>Medic<strong>in</strong>e</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Asia</strong><br />

pashraya Chiktisa. Div<strong>in</strong>e karmas like<br />

prayer, chant<strong>in</strong>g mantras, ablutions,<br />

yagya, wear<strong>in</strong>g precious stones, etc., are<br />

the usual methods of Daivavyapashraya<br />

Chikitsa.<br />

Special mode of treatment<br />

Rasayana<br />

Rasayana (Rejuvenation Therapy) is a<br />

speciality of Ayurveda which ma<strong>in</strong>ly deals<br />

with the preservation and promotion of<br />

health. It promotes longevity and prevents<br />

or delays the ag<strong>in</strong>g process. Rasayana<br />

promotes resistance aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>in</strong>fections and<br />

other causative factors for the disease by<br />

ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g the equilibrium of Vata, Pitta<br />

and Kapha. 20 The Rasayana, if adm<strong>in</strong>istered<br />

at an early age, also helps the body<br />

metabolism <strong>in</strong> such a way that the genetic<br />

predisposition for a particular disease is<br />

avoided and the <strong>in</strong>tensity of the symptoms<br />

of a particular disease is greatly reduced.<br />

Rejuvenation therapy, <strong>in</strong> addition to<br />

deal<strong>in</strong>g with the preventive and promotive<br />

aspects of health rather than merely with<br />

the disease condition, acts also by<br />

improv<strong>in</strong>g micro-circulation <strong>in</strong> the body<br />

lead<strong>in</strong>g to better bio-availability of nutrients<br />

to tissues. The use of Rasayana drugs and<br />

other measures produces longevity,<br />

improves memory, <strong>in</strong>telligence and good<br />

health, promotes youthfulness, good<br />

lusture, complexion and voice, promotes<br />

optimum strength of the body and the<br />

sense organs, efficiency <strong>in</strong> talk and humility,<br />

and makes the personality attractive. There<br />

are many Rasayana preparations which are<br />

used accord<strong>in</strong>g to the psychosomatic<br />

constitution and disease condition of the<br />

patient. The immunomodulatory effect of<br />

Rasayana drugs like Withania somnifera,<br />

Asparagus racemosus and T<strong>in</strong>ospora<br />

cordifolia is well-established through<br />

scientific parameters. Therefore, adm<strong>in</strong>is-<br />

tration of Rasayana drugs hav<strong>in</strong>g an<br />

immunoprotective effect is helpful <strong>in</strong><br />

improv<strong>in</strong>g the immunity and general wellbe<strong>in</strong>g<br />

of patients.<br />

Panchakarma<br />

Panchakarma (Purification Therapy) deals<br />

ma<strong>in</strong>ly with the removal of tox<strong>in</strong>s and waste<br />

materials from the body to purify the<br />

biological system from gross channels to<br />

eradicate the disease completely. It is<br />

helpful <strong>in</strong> the prevention of disease and<br />

preservation and promotion of health, as<br />

well as the management of psychosomatic,<br />

neurological, gastro<strong>in</strong>test<strong>in</strong>al, cardiovascular<br />

and many other chronic, degenerative<br />

diseases and iatrogenic conditions.<br />

Panchakarma plays a vital role <strong>in</strong> Ayurvedic<br />

therapeutics and occupies an important<br />

place <strong>in</strong> the Ayurvedic system of medic<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

This five-fold purification therapy, a classical<br />

form of treatment <strong>in</strong> Ayurveda, <strong>in</strong>cludes<br />

Vamana (emesis), Virechana (Purgation),<br />

Asthapana (Decoction enema), Anuvasana<br />

(Oily enema) and Nasya (Nasal Insufflation).<br />

21 Under pre-operative management,<br />

the doshas are liquefied by external<br />

and <strong>in</strong>ternal oleation by ghee, oil,<br />

massages and fomentation followed by the<br />

ma<strong>in</strong> purification processes, which also<br />

<strong>in</strong>clude <strong>in</strong>tra-vag<strong>in</strong>al and <strong>in</strong>tra-urethral<br />

enemas and blood lett<strong>in</strong>g, for the elim<strong>in</strong>ation<br />

of tox<strong>in</strong>s from the body. Under postoperative<br />

management, various types of<br />

dietetics and discipl<strong>in</strong>ed liv<strong>in</strong>g for a few days<br />

after the treatment have been <strong>in</strong>dicated. In<br />

Ayurveda many treatment methods are<br />

described, i.e., Abhyanga, Tarpana, 13<br />

types of fomentations, etc. In Kerala,<br />

physicians have developed specialized<br />

techniques of Panchakarma, which is<br />

someth<strong>in</strong>g more than the purification<br />
