oryo <strong>Medic<strong>in</strong>e</strong>, the nation’s traditional<br />
medic<strong>in</strong>e and precious medical<br />
heritage, has contributed to the health<br />
promotion of the people and treatment of<br />
diseases for thousands of years.<br />
Exist<strong>in</strong>g historical works record that <strong>in</strong><br />
the 5–7th century BC famous Korean<br />
doctors were sent for treat<strong>in</strong>g the elite on<br />
the <strong>in</strong>vitation of the neighbour<strong>in</strong>g k<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />
Korean acupuncture specialists crossed<br />
over to Japan and taught acupuncture<br />
skills and tra<strong>in</strong>ed expatriate tra<strong>in</strong>ees <strong>in</strong> our<br />
country. This makes it clear that <strong>in</strong> those<br />
days our Koryo <strong>Medic<strong>in</strong>e</strong> was of a very high<br />
quality.<br />
Theories of Koryo <strong>Medic<strong>in</strong>e</strong> were<br />
systematized through cl<strong>in</strong>ical practices and<br />
experiences and, whether big or small, were<br />
<strong>in</strong>tegrated and published by contemporary<br />
medical scientists. These have been preserved<br />
and handed down from generation to<br />
generation and are even now considered<br />
as valuable references <strong>in</strong> the field of Koryo<br />
<strong>Medic<strong>in</strong>e</strong>.<br />
For example, “Uibangryuchui’’ (Medical<br />
Encyclopaedia), a world-famous work<br />
published <strong>in</strong> 1443, is an unparalleled<br />
masterpiece and consisted of 366 volumes.<br />
A prom<strong>in</strong>ent Japanese medical historian,<br />
Mikisake, highly praised Uibangryuchui as<br />
the foremost world medical encyclopaedia<br />

not found anywhere else.<br />
Although various k<strong>in</strong>ds of theories and<br />
therapies of Koryo <strong>Medic<strong>in</strong>e</strong> such as drug<br />
prescription, acupuncture and moxibustion<br />
have many advantages, (some legendary<br />
and non-scientific) scientifically planned<br />
cl<strong>in</strong>ical trials have been carried out to<br />
validate the claim of Koryo medic<strong>in</strong>e. Koryo<br />
medic<strong>in</strong>e products can be comb<strong>in</strong>ed with<br />
allopathic medic<strong>in</strong>e treatment.<br />
DPRK has a well-knit Koryo medical<br />
service system. In the M<strong>in</strong>istry of Public<br />
Health, Koryo <strong>Medic<strong>in</strong>e</strong> Guid<strong>in</strong>g Section<br />
gives guidance on traditional medical<br />
services. At the Central level there is a<br />
General Hospital of Koryo <strong>Medic<strong>in</strong>e</strong>; all of<br />
the 12 prov<strong>in</strong>ces have Koryo medic<strong>in</strong>e<br />
hospitals, and each city and county hospital<br />
has a Koryo treatment department.<br />
All the Koryo <strong>Medic<strong>in</strong>e</strong> <strong>in</strong>stitutions <strong>in</strong><br />
DPRK are State-owned.<br />
Basic research is also be<strong>in</strong>g carried out<br />
on Koryo medic<strong>in</strong>e – these <strong>in</strong>clude<br />
identification of the components of herbal<br />
medic<strong>in</strong>e, pharmacology of herbs, the<br />
pr<strong>in</strong>ciples of meridian practices and<br />
acupuncture, and cl<strong>in</strong>ical trials with herbal<br />
drugs – <strong>in</strong> comb<strong>in</strong>ation as well as s<strong>in</strong>gly.<br />
The follow<strong>in</strong>g table gives an idea of the<br />
extent of services under Koryo medic<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong><br />
