Several mesospheric species such as atomic hydrogen, oxygen <strong>an</strong>d ozone as measured by<br />

Sciamachy <strong>an</strong>d Gomos on Envisat show a pronounced dependence on the solar flux during<br />

the 23rd solar cycle. This dependence is <strong>an</strong>alysed <strong>an</strong>d compared to model simulations of the<br />

HAMburg Model of the Neutral <strong>an</strong>d Ionized Atmosphere. Differences are discussed with<br />

respect to dynamical <strong>an</strong>d photochemical effects.
