STP12 Abstracts Berlin, 12 - 16 July 2010 SCOSTEP Symposium 2010 Long-term trends and their changes in midlatitude MLT winds Jacobi Christoph 1 , Liu Renqiang 1 , Merzlyakov Eugeny 2 , Portnyagin Yuri 2 , Manson Alan 3 , Meek Chris 3 , Solovyova Tatjana 2 1 University of Leipzig, Institute for Meteorology, 2 Institute for Experimental Meteorology, Obninsk, 3 Institute of Space and Atmospheric Studies, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon Long-term variability of mesosphere/lower thermosphere (MLT) winds, tidal amplitudes and phases, and long-period oscillations has been analyzed using three ground-based wind data series obtained at Collm (52°N, 15°E), Obninsk (55°N, 37°E) and Saskatoon (52°N, 107°E). Applying piecewise linear trend analysis with a priori unknown number and positions of breakpoints shows that trend models with breakpoints are partly preferred against straight lines. Differences between the three wind time series and their trends are found, which are partly connected with stratospheric stationary planetary waves, indicating an influence of stratospheric circulation on MLT trends.
