Galactic cosmic rays which interact with the Earth's atmosphere produce a cascade of
secondary particles. These secondary particles are able to generate cosmogenic nuclides, in
particular 7 Be, 10 Be, 14 C and 37 Cl, by spallation reactions between secondary neutrons as well
as protons and atmospheric gases like nitrogen and oxygen. Complex atmospheric processes
lead to the fact that these nuclides are stored in natural archives such as tree rings and ice
cores. In order to model these concentrations the production rate as well as loss processes
have to be simulated. The first step is to determine the production rate, which will be
presented here using the GEANT4 tool PLANETOCOSMICS to model the radiation field, i.
e. neutrons and protons in the atmosphere and the corresponding production rate of the
cosmogenic nuclides 7 Be, 10 Be, 14 C and 37 Cl.
