Inhomogeneous currents <strong>an</strong>d <strong>an</strong>omalous resistivity along auroral field lines<br />

Field-aligned auroral currents are intrinsically inhomogeneous across the background<br />

magnetic field, which may have a signific<strong>an</strong>t influence on the physics of magnetosphereionosphere<br />

coupling. We study effects of current inhomogeneity on current-driven microinstabilities<br />

that could result in the <strong>an</strong>omalous resistivity along auroral field lines. We show<br />

that the current shear, even with relatively small cross-field gradient, highly reduces the<br />

thresholds of kinetic ion sound (KSW) <strong>an</strong>d kinetic Alfvén waves (KAWs) micro-instabilities.<br />

The KAW instability dominates for relatively high plasma β ~ 0.1, whereas the KSW<br />

instability dominates for β
