QBO influences on the polar mesosphere <strong>an</strong>d lower-thermosphere<br />

Long-term ground-based radar observations have been used to investigate the influence of the<br />

equatorial stratospheric quasi-biennial oscillation on the dynamics of the polar mesosphere<br />

<strong>an</strong>d lower thermosphere. When the vari<strong>an</strong>ce in the 12-30 day b<strong>an</strong>d-passed horizontal wind is<br />

used as a proxy for long-period pl<strong>an</strong>etary wave activity, it is found that during winter<br />

(summer) pl<strong>an</strong>etary wave activity is enh<strong>an</strong>ced (reduced) in the Antarctic MLT when the QBO<br />

around 40 hPa is positive. Furthermore, when a QBO-driven enh<strong>an</strong>cement in pl<strong>an</strong>etary wave<br />

activity is observed in the high latitude southern hemisphere, a corresponding reduction is<br />

observed in the opposite hemisphere. The QBO is also shown to influence the zonal wind in<br />

the Antarctic MLT, especially around the time of the polar vortex break up, <strong>an</strong>d to modulate<br />

the Antarctic semidiurnal tide through ch<strong>an</strong>ges in the amplitude of the S=1 non-migrating<br />

component.
