Making the CAWSES Virtual <strong>Institut</strong>e: escience <strong>an</strong>d informatics at work<br />

Based on a successful pilot study during CAWSES I that utilized cyber infrastructure to<br />

org<strong>an</strong>ize <strong>an</strong>d conduct science, CAWSES-II un<strong>der</strong> the eScience <strong>an</strong>d Informatics task group has<br />

created <strong>an</strong> International Virtual <strong>Institut</strong>e. This institute is org<strong>an</strong>ized around the principles that<br />

progress in system-level investigations requires: researchers committed to the value of<br />

pursuing science at the interface between disciplines, strongly-focused science topics that<br />

provide a common theme around which disciplines are able to interact, me<strong>an</strong>s of educating<br />

researchers about the key scientific issues in other disciplines <strong>an</strong>d the connections between<br />

disciplines, access to scientific publications in other discipline areas, new forms of scholarly<br />

publishing, <strong>an</strong>d the structure needed to bring researchers into contact with data sets, models,<br />

<strong>an</strong>d each other, across disciplines <strong>an</strong>d national boundaries.<br />

The presentation will introduce the concepts <strong>an</strong>d capabilities of the Virtual <strong>Institut</strong>e r<strong>an</strong>ging from data<br />

resources via Virtual Observatories to web-based collaboration environments <strong>an</strong>d indicate how<br />

CAWSES II Task groups may utlize this mech<strong>an</strong>ism to further their research activities <strong>an</strong>d outcomes.
