Space Weather Forecasting in IZMIRAN<br />

The Geophysical Forecast Center has been operating at IZMIRAN for 11 years. It provides<br />

the customers with the different-term daily forecast of various aspects of the space weather,<br />

such as the solar <strong>an</strong>d geomagnetic activity, radiation conditions, etc.<br />

The on-line forecast is based on the bulk of data from various heliogeophysical<br />

information resources. These are the optical, X-ray <strong>an</strong>d UV solar images <strong>an</strong>d movies; the<br />

images <strong>an</strong>d movies obtained with coronagraphs; measurements of photospheric magnetic<br />

fields <strong>an</strong>d solar radio emission; helioseismic data; spacecraft <strong>an</strong>d ground-based measurements<br />

of X-rays, gamma-rays, solar, <strong>an</strong>d galactic cosmic rays; velocity, density, <strong>an</strong>d temperature<br />

variations of interpl<strong>an</strong>etary plasma; variations in three components <strong>an</strong>d absolute value of the<br />

interpl<strong>an</strong>etary magnetic field; <strong>an</strong>d real-time ground-based measurements of geomagnetic field<br />

variations. These data, together with our previously built up databases, are used to <strong>an</strong>alyze the<br />

present-day situation <strong>an</strong>d tendencies in the evolution of heliogeophysical processes.<br />

Most of the space weather forecast methods created at IZMIRAN <strong>an</strong>d are partly<br />

automated. Usually, the forecast issued by <strong>an</strong> automatic program is consi<strong>der</strong>ed to be<br />

preliminary <strong>an</strong>d is liable to appraisal by a group of experts. These people take a decision of<br />

whether a correction of the input data <strong>an</strong>d a new cycle of automatic treatment are necessary or<br />

the forecast c<strong>an</strong> be adopted as final <strong>an</strong>d delivered to the users.<br />

The space weather forecast is delivered to the customer (various departments of the<br />

Russi<strong>an</strong> Space Agency, Ministry of Extreme Situations, medical institutions, <strong>an</strong>d mass media)<br />

using all available communication facilities: Internet, e-mail, fax. The forecast <strong>an</strong>d<br />

information on the current geomagnetic situation <strong>an</strong>d main meteorological parameters c<strong>an</strong> be<br />

obtained via the automatic <strong>an</strong>swerback phone, (unique service of the kind in the world).
