Solar-Terrestrial Effects in the Mesosphere <strong>an</strong>d Thermosphere Observed by the<br />

TIMED/SABER Instrument<br />

Solar-terrestrial effects in the mesosphere <strong>an</strong>d thermosphere are readily observed in the data<br />

from the TIMED/SABER instrument now in orbit nearly 8.5 years. The effects are evident in<br />

the energy bal<strong>an</strong>ce, the thermal structure, the chemical composition, <strong>an</strong>d by inference, the<br />

atmospheric dynamics. Effects are evident on time scales r<strong>an</strong>ging from 1 day to the 11-year<br />

solar cycle. Of particular interest is the study of the thermospheric cooling during the<br />

prolonged solar minimum <strong>an</strong>d the relative response of cooling by carbon dioxide <strong>an</strong>d nitric<br />

oxide. We observe the latter to have decreased by <strong>an</strong> or<strong>der</strong> of magnitude in the last 8 years.<br />

During geomagnetic storm events the emission from NO may increase by <strong>an</strong> or<strong>der</strong> of<br />

magnitude over a day <strong>an</strong>d then rapidly revert back to pre-storm conditions. In the mesosphere<br />

the effects of solar <strong>an</strong>d geomagnetic variability are less pronounced, but still quite evident, for<br />

example in cooling by carbon dioxide. In this talk we will present <strong>an</strong> overview of the solarterrestrial<br />

effects observed by SABER as well as future pl<strong>an</strong>s as the instrument heads towards<br />

11 or more years of observations.
