The Skoghall board mill is one of the world’s biggest producers
of packaging board for dairy products, juices, sauces and soups.
The Skoghall mill has authorisation to produce 800 000 t board
a year and over 80% of its production is exported.
WSP was appointed against very tough competition to carry out
structural engineering, construction management and site supervision
for a major conversion of the mill to alleviate its impact on the
environment and enhance energy efficiency. Stora Enso has
earmarked £140M for a range of activities including the installation
of modern equipment including a new soda recovery boiler and
evaporation plant, the new strong gas system, tall-oil plant and
rebuild of turbines, new control rooms and pipeline bridges
and the conversion of the oil-fired boiler to bio-fuel with new
fuel processing equipment.
These extensive activities have resulted in considerably more
efficient energy consumption and increased usage of bio-fuels.
The total saving of oil consumption is 60 000 cu m annually, whilst
self-sufficiency in power will increase from 15% to nearly 40%.
After the project Skoghall mill will produce 400 GWh power
a year, equivalent to the heating of 20 000 homes.
