England’s strategic road network is divided into fourteen areas
by the Highways Agency, the organisation responsible for operating,
maintaining and improving the nation’s trunk roads.The Trunk Road
Network comprises less than 2.5% of England’s roads but carries
nearly a third of all traffic and two-thirds of all freight. Since 2003,
WSP, in a joint venture with Carillion Highway Maintenance Ltd, has
been responsible for managing and delivering all maintenance and
improvements in Area 12 in the north-east of England.This area
represents about 8% of the national network with 525 km of
motorway and trunk roads stretching from the Pennines in the
west to the coastline in the east, and from Sheffield in the south
to Scarborough in the north.
Our duties include regular safety inspections, detailed condition
surveys and renewal of the carriageway and all roadside features,
maintaining all the motorway lighting, signals and communication
systems, and providing a complete winter maintenance service.
Our solutions include the development of innovative new road
technologies.The application of thin surfacing improves the
experience of road users by decreasing surface noise. Slip-formed
concrete safety fences, being more robust than metal barriers,
increase road safety by preventing vehicles from crossing the central
reservation, as well as delivering long term cost benefits through
reduced need for maintenance and repair.
In addition, we man a customer service desk at the Highways
Agency’s Regional Control Centre, providing 24/7 incident
management, working in close cooperation with the Agency’s incident
desk to assist the emergency services in dealing with accidents.
In partnership with all members of the project team, and backed
by many years experience of working for the Highways Agency, we
deliver value for money projects supported by sound management
of project finances and a quality of work that has been the subject of
numerous letters of commendation and regular positive Performance
Review, Improvement and Delivery (PRIDe) audits.
In Area 12,WSP is contributing to the achievement of the Highways
Agency’s ambition to deliver a high quality service to all road users by:

■ Seeking and responding to feedback about the network
and its operation.
