NEW BIOTECHNOLOGY LAB FOR LEADING PHARMACEUTICAL MANUFACTURER
AstraZeneca is a global leader in pharmaceuticals and one of Sweden’s
key exporters.The corporation has its R&D headquarters in Sweden,
where 5000 of the company’s 11 900 R&D employees worldwide are
based.AstraZeneca’s R&D activities south of Stockholm focus on the
research and development of drugs in the neuroscience therapy area,
focusing primarily on neurological disorders like Alzheimer’s disease
and multiple sclerosis, as well as neuropathic and nociceptive pain.
Having worked for AstraZeneca for many years,WSP has considerable
experience of the drug industry and its specific demands on
cleanliness, safety issues and operational reliability. In recent years,WSP
has been responsible for power project management at AstraZeneca’s
biotechnology laboratory, a research centre also capable of producing
protein pharmaceuticals.This work builds on a previous project to
design the power and telecommunication systems for the conversion
of an older laboratory into a state-of-the-art chemical research facility
a few years ago.
The recently completed biotechnology lab has an area of 23 000 sq m,
including animal pens and servicing facilities.The interior of this facility
is divided by glass walls to enable contact between the laboratories,
open-plan offices and production facilities.WSP designed the power,
telecoms and transport systems, while also researching and proposing
suitable sites for cameras, technical specifications and technical
drawings for tendering for camera equipment.
Laboratories and animal pens must be easy to clean, while efficient
ventilation is crucial.These facilities are also subject to specific
reliability standards – no power outage is permissible, and accordingly
WSP has installed power back-up making the new building
independent, so that operations are never disrupted.
WSP’s landscape architects were also involved in the project, designing
a tranquil courtyard garden to enable staff to experience the mystery
of the surrounding forest at close quarters.The garden includes a
dramatic waterfall built of locally quarried granite that springs into
life during rain showers in a setting of mossy rocks, shady trees and
colourful bushes.
