out. You want to decompress. Your mind scans a gamut <strong>of</strong> excuses,<br />
hoping to discover a legitimate reason to bow out. Realizing it is hopeless,<br />
you put on your evening clothes and trudge to the event.<br />
Entering the networking venue, you see unknown people milling<br />
about with nametags already peeling <strong>of</strong>f <strong>of</strong> business suit lapels. Th e<br />
volume is high, and the mood seems cheerful—in direct contrast to<br />
your own state. People are drinking, laughing, and perusing tapas<br />
platt ers. You wonder how much more time is required to fulfi ll your<br />
obligation to att end.<br />
An initial search for <strong>of</strong>fi cemates proves futile. You seek out a quiet<br />
corner to check your voice messages, although you last checked them<br />
fi ve minutes ago. Another tedious night <strong>of</strong> networking—or the failure<br />
to do so—begins.<br />
How about a do-over? Take two.<br />
Pause<br />
Preregister. Th is early commitment serves four purposes:<br />
1. Gain time for mental preparation.<br />
2. Score a preprinted nametag.<br />
3. Reduce the likelihood <strong>of</strong> backing out at the last minute.<br />
4. Ensure yourself a spot at important events.<br />
I don’t think I’d go to any networking events if I didn’t preregister.<br />
In the moment, aft er a typical day <strong>of</strong> presenting, facilitating meetings,<br />
and executive coaching, the last thing I want to do is go to a networking<br />
event. But once I commit myself, I don’t back down.<br />
Plan your att ire. Th is means more than simply dressing sharp.<br />
Appearances matt er. However, this is also the time to weigh the ben-<br />
