ruling <strong>the</strong> universe, whose will might be learnt by mankind,<br />

and obedience to whom would bring success and<br />

happiness.<br />

III.<br />

Pulang-Gana, and how He came to be Worshipped<br />

as <strong>the</strong> God <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Earth.<br />

Long, long ago, though <strong>the</strong> <strong>Dyaks</strong> knew <strong>of</strong> paddy, and<br />

planted it every year, yet <strong>the</strong>^y had very poor crops,<br />

because <strong>the</strong>y did not know what god owned <strong>the</strong> land,<br />

and as <strong>the</strong>y did not <strong>of</strong>fer him sacrifices he did nothing<br />

to help <strong>the</strong>m. In those days <strong>the</strong>re lived toge<strong>the</strong>r seven<br />

bro<strong>the</strong>rs and <strong>the</strong>ir only sister. The bro<strong>the</strong>rs' names were<br />

Bui-Nasi, Belang-Pinggang, Bejit-Manai, Bunga-Jawa,<br />

Litan-Dai, Kenyawang, and Pulang-Gana, and <strong>the</strong><br />

sister's Puchong-Kempat. They lived on a hill by <strong>the</strong><br />

side <strong>of</strong> a broad river. On all sides were wide plains, and<br />

beyond <strong>the</strong>m high hills rose in <strong>the</strong> distance. Most <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>se plains were covered with thick jungle, and only a<br />

few clearings where paddy had been planted<br />

could be<br />

seen.<br />

Not far from <strong>the</strong> house <strong>the</strong> bro<strong>the</strong>rs had a garden in<br />

which <strong>the</strong>y planted potatoes, yams, sugar-cane, and<br />

but a porcupine would <strong>of</strong>ten come at night and<br />

tapioca ;<br />

do much damage to <strong>the</strong> garden. They bade <strong>the</strong>ir youngest<br />

bro<strong>the</strong>r, Pulang-Gana, keep watch, directing him to drive<br />

away<br />

<strong>the</strong> animal or kill it if he could. But all his efforts<br />

were vain. When he was awake <strong>the</strong> animal did not come,<br />

but as soon as he fell asleep <strong>the</strong> porcupine would creep in<br />

quietly and eat up <strong>the</strong> potatoes and yams. The elder<br />

bro<strong>the</strong>rs were not kind to Pulang-Gana. They would not
