. The platoon normally forms in line with the squad leaders on the<br />
right of their squads <strong>and</strong> the guide on the right of the first squad leader<br />
(see fig. 6-1). The platoon marches in line for short distances only.<br />
8-3. POSTS OF INDIVIDUALS<br />
a. In line, the platoon comm<strong>and</strong>er takes post 6 paces in front of<br />
the center of the front rank of the platoon (see fig. 9-1). In column,<br />
the platoon comm<strong>and</strong>er marches at the head of the left file of the platoon<br />
(see fig. 6-2).<br />
b. When the platoon comm<strong>and</strong>er is present, the platoon sergeant<br />
takes post to the left file of the rear rank when the platoon is in line,<br />
<strong>and</strong> following the last member of the right file (squad) when in column.<br />
When the platoon comm<strong>and</strong>er is not present, after the platoon is formed,<br />
the platoon sergeant takes post <strong>and</strong> <strong>drill</strong>s the platoon as prescribed for<br />
the platoon comm<strong>and</strong>er.<br />
c. The platoon guide takes post as stated in paragraph 8-4.<br />
d. Extra <strong>Marine</strong>s may fall in on the left when the platoon is in<br />
line <strong>and</strong> in rear when in column.<br />
8-4. RULES FOR THE GUIDE<br />
a. Unless otherwise announced, guide is right, <strong>and</strong> the guide takes<br />
post on the right. In line, he/she is posted to the right of the squad<br />
leader of the first squad. In column, he/she is posted in front of the<br />
squad leader of the third squad.<br />
b. In column, when it is desired to guide left, the comm<strong>and</strong> GUIDE<br />
LEFT is given. At this comm<strong>and</strong>, the guide <strong>and</strong> the platoon comm<strong>and</strong>er<br />
exchange positions. The guide crosses between the platoon comm<strong>and</strong>er <strong>and</strong><br />
the platoon. To return the guide to normal position, GUIDE RIGHT is<br />
comm<strong>and</strong>ed. The guide <strong>and</strong> platoon comm<strong>and</strong>er return to their normal<br />
positions with the guide again passing between the platoon comm<strong>and</strong>er <strong>and</strong><br />
the platoon. This movement may be made at a halt or in march. The base<br />
squad or base file is the one behind the guide.<br />
c. The guide does not change his/her position at the comm<strong>and</strong> DRESS<br />
LEFT (RIGHT), DRESS.<br />
d. When a platoon in line is given the comm<strong>and</strong> RIGHT, FACE, the<br />
platoon guide executes right face with the platoon. Then he/she<br />
immediately faces to the right in marching <strong>and</strong> marches to a position in<br />
front of the right squad leader, halts, <strong>and</strong> executes left face. If a<br />
platoon is given LEFT, FACE, the guide executes left face with the platoon<br />
but does not change his/her position within the platoon.<br />
e. When a platoon in column is given the comm<strong>and</strong> COLUMN OF FILES<br />
FROM THE LEFT, MARCH, the guide, on the preparatory comm<strong>and</strong>, takes his/her<br />
position in front of the left squad leader so he/she is at the head of the<br />
column.<br />
f. When a platoon in column is given the comm<strong>and</strong> COLUMN OF TWOS<br />
FROM THE LEFT, MARCH, the guide, on the preparatory comm<strong>and</strong>, takes his/her<br />
position in front of the second file from the left so he/she is at the<br />
head of the right file of the column. He/she does this by facing to the<br />
left as in marching <strong>and</strong> marches to a position in front of designated right<br />
squad leader, halts, <strong>and</strong> executes right face.<br />
g. When reforming in a column of threes or fours from a file or<br />
column of twos, the guide posts himself/herself in his/her normal position<br />
when the movement is completed.<br />
h. The guide sets the direction <strong>and</strong> cadence of the march. The<br />
leading <strong>Marine</strong> in each file is responsible for interval.<br />
