5-8. REST FROM ANY POSITION OF THE SWORD<br />
The comm<strong>and</strong> is REST. It is executed in the same manner as at ease,<br />
the only difference being that you may talk.<br />
5-9. TO RETURN TO ATTENTION<br />
The comm<strong>and</strong> is PLATOON (COMPANY, DETAIL), ATTENTION. Execution<br />
is begun on the preparatory comm<strong>and</strong>.<br />
a. On PLATOON (COMPANY, DETAIL), come to parade rest.<br />
b. On ATTENTION, bring the left heel smartly against the right <strong>and</strong><br />
the left h<strong>and</strong> to the side. Raise the blade so the point is 3 inches from<br />
the deck.<br />
5-10. RETURN SWORD FROM CARRY OR ORDER SWORD<br />
a. The comm<strong>and</strong> is RETURN, SWORD. Execution is begun on the<br />
preparatory comm<strong>and</strong>.<br />
b. On the preparatory comm<strong>and</strong>, RETURN:<br />
(1) Officers raise the right h<strong>and</strong> to a position 6 inches in front<br />
of the neck. Keep the thumb on the left side of the grip,<br />
wrist straight <strong>and</strong> elbow against the body. The sword should<br />
tilt forward at 30 degrees. At the same time, grasp the<br />
scabbard with the left h<strong>and</strong> just above the upper brass ring<br />
mounting. Tilt it forward <strong>and</strong> turn it clockwise 180 degrees.<br />
The scabbard should form a 45-degree angle with the deck.<br />
Then lower the sword point to a position just above the<br />
opening of the scabbard. Look down at the opening. Guide he<br />
point into the opening with the left thumb <strong>and</strong> forefinger<br />
until the right forearm is parallel to the deck. Then raise<br />
the head back to attention. The left h<strong>and</strong> holds the scabbard<br />
against the side (see fig. 5-15).<br />
