are in line formation, the platoon comm<strong>and</strong>ers face<br />

center; but when companies are in mass formation, the<br />

platoon comm<strong>and</strong>ers first take 1 pace forward, then face<br />

center. Extra officers <strong>and</strong> company executive officers<br />

move around their company’s flank nearest the center<br />

<strong>and</strong> take posts in the rank formed by the platoon<br />

comm<strong>and</strong>ers.<br />

(c) On MARCH, the b<strong>and</strong> plays, officers <strong>and</strong> guidon bearers<br />

close to the center at close interval, halt, <strong>and</strong><br />

individually face the troop comm<strong>and</strong>er. Company<br />

comm<strong>and</strong>ers, when closing to the center, must oblique<br />

slightly forward in order to close on a line 4 paces in<br />

front of that formed by the guidon bearers. Guidon<br />

bearers close on their own line <strong>and</strong> take position<br />

behind their respective company comm<strong>and</strong>ers. All<br />

other officers close on the line of platoon comm<strong>and</strong>ers.<br />

(d) After all officers <strong>and</strong> guidon bearers have closed <strong>and</strong><br />

faced forward, the senior officer comm<strong>and</strong>s FORWARD,<br />

MARCH. As they advance, the center officer of the<br />

leading rank is the guide. He guides toward the troop<br />

comm<strong>and</strong>er. The group is halted 6 paces from the troop<br />

comm<strong>and</strong>er by the senior officer. Officers not armed<br />

with the sword hesitate for one count after the comm<strong>and</strong><br />

HALT <strong>and</strong> execute the h<strong>and</strong> salute. If armed with the<br />

sword, they execute present sword as prescribed in<br />

paragraph 5-3. Guidon bearers execute present guidon<br />

as prescribed in paragraph 6-2. All members of the<br />

party should be at salute on the fourth count after the<br />

comm<strong>and</strong> HALT. The troop comm<strong>and</strong>er, if the officers are<br />

armed with the show orders CARRY, SWORDS. On CARRY, the<br />

guidon bearers execute the first movement To carry<br />

guidon <strong>and</strong> the officers execute order sword. On<br />

SWORDS, guidon bearers complete carry guidon <strong>and</strong> the<br />

officers Execute carry sword. If the officers are not<br />

armed with the sword, the troop comm<strong>and</strong>er orders READY,<br />

TWO. On READY, guidon bearers execute the first<br />

movement to carry guidon. On TWO, guidon bearers<br />

complete carry guidon <strong>and</strong> the officers terminate their<br />

h<strong>and</strong> salutes. The troop comm<strong>and</strong>er returns the salute.<br />

He terminates it on the same comm<strong>and</strong> which terminates<br />

those of the officers’ party. Staff members do not<br />

salute at this time. The troop comm<strong>and</strong>er then gives<br />

whatever instructions to the officers he deems<br />

necessary.<br />

(9) The comm<strong>and</strong>er of troops then comm<strong>and</strong>s, POSTS, MARCH.<br />

(a) On POSTS, all officers <strong>and</strong> guidon bearers face about.<br />

(b) On MARCH, they step off. The center officer is the guide as before. He<br />

guides toward the center of the battalion formation.<br />

(c) The senior officer comm<strong>and</strong>s, OFFICERS, HALT. The comm<strong>and</strong> of execution HALT is<br />

timed so that, when companies are in line formation, the rank of platoon<br />

comm<strong>and</strong>ers is 6 paces from the line of troops; <strong>and</strong> when the companies are in<br />

mass formation, the platoon comm<strong>and</strong>ers are 2 paces from the line of troops.<br />

The senior officer then comm<strong>and</strong>s POSTS; MARCH.<br />

(1) On POSTS, officers <strong>and</strong> guidon bearers face in the direction of their<br />

companies.<br />

(2) On MARCH, officers step off in succession at 4-pace intervals, resume<br />

their posts, <strong>and</strong> execute order sword if so armed. Guidon bearers step<br />

off with their company comm<strong>and</strong>ers, resume their posts, <strong>and</strong> execute order<br />

guidon. The b<strong>and</strong> stops playing when the last officer has resumed his<br />

post. During the execution of officers center <strong>and</strong> officers post, except<br />

when saluting, the troop comm<strong>and</strong>er remains at carry sword, if so armed.<br />

(10) After the officers <strong>and</strong> guidon bearers have returned to<br />

their original positions with their companies, the comm<strong>and</strong>er of troops directs the<br />
