The platoon comm<strong>and</strong>er may then comm<strong>and</strong> RIGHT SHOULDER (LEFT SHOULDER,<br />

PORT, OR SLING) ARMS; FORWARD (COLUMN RIGHT/LEFT), MARCH to cause the<br />

platoon to march in column. (NOTE: As the platoon becomes inverted if<br />

faced to the left, this should only be done for short movements. Being in<br />

line to form column facing to the left, the platoon should first form<br />

column by facing to the right, then execute necessary successive column<br />

movements until the column is faced in the desired direction.)<br />

8-9. TO MARCH (FORM) AT CLOSE INTERVAL IN COLUMN<br />

a. When in column at normal interval, at a halt, or in march at<br />

quick time, to obtain close interval between files, the comm<strong>and</strong> is CLOSE,<br />

MARCH.<br />

b. At a halt, on the comm<strong>and</strong> MARCH, members of the base squad st<strong>and</strong><br />

still. Other <strong>Marine</strong>s obtain close interval by doing right (left) step.<br />

c. When marching, the comm<strong>and</strong> MARCH is given on the right foot when<br />

the base squad is on the right <strong>and</strong> on the left foot when the base squad is<br />

on the left. When the base squad is center, the comm<strong>and</strong> MARCH may be<br />

given on either foot. At the comm<strong>and</strong> MARCH, the base squad takes up the<br />

half step. Other squad(s) oblique toward base squad until the interval<br />

between <strong>Marine</strong>s is 4 inches. When squad members are abreast of the<br />

corresponding member of the base squad, they oblique to the front <strong>and</strong> take<br />

up the half step (see fig. 8-3). At the comm<strong>and</strong> FORWARD, MARCH, all<br />

squads resume the 30-inch step.<br />
