adjutant presents the formation to the comm<strong>and</strong>er of troops.<br />

(NOTE: Also at Adjutant’s Call to form for the review, the comm<strong>and</strong>er<br />

of troops <strong>and</strong> staff march from their positions as described above to<br />

a position midway between the line of troops <strong>and</strong> the reviewing area<br />

where they halt facing the line of troops (remaining with swords in<br />

scabbards).<br />

(2) To present the comm<strong>and</strong> to the comm<strong>and</strong>er of troops, the adjutant<br />

still facing the troops <strong>and</strong> at his/her post midway between the<br />

line of company (battalion) comm<strong>and</strong>ers <strong>and</strong> the comm<strong>and</strong>er of<br />

troops, comm<strong>and</strong>s PRESENT, ARMS. When all troops are at present<br />

arms, the adjutant faces the comm<strong>and</strong>er of troops <strong>and</strong> reports,<br />

"Sir, the Parade is Formed". The comm<strong>and</strong>er of troops returns<br />

the salute <strong>and</strong> directs the adjutant to TAKE YOUR POST, SIR. The<br />

adjutant then marches around the comm<strong>and</strong>er of troops’ right to<br />

his/her post in the staff, halts, faces the battalion<br />

(regiment), <strong>and</strong> comes to order sword. When the adjutant is in<br />

position, the comm<strong>and</strong>er of troops, with the staff (except the<br />

adjutant who already has sword drawn) draws sword. The comm<strong>and</strong>er<br />

of troops then comm<strong>and</strong>s ORDER, ARMS.<br />

(3) If not at an evening review including "Retreat", after all<br />

troops are at the order, the comm<strong>and</strong>er of troops, still facing<br />

the troops, directs the senior staff officer to BOX THE STAFF in<br />

a voice only loud enough for the staff to hear. The senior<br />

staff officer then reverses the staff (see paragraph 10-3) so<br />

that it halts 2 paces from <strong>and</strong> facing the comm<strong>and</strong>er of troops<br />

(who remained facing the formation). The comm<strong>and</strong>er of troops<br />

next faces the front <strong>and</strong> waits for the reviewing officer to take<br />

post in the reviewing area (see paragraph 13-6). If appropriate,<br />

prior to facing the front, the comm<strong>and</strong>er of troops may comm<strong>and</strong><br />

PARADE, REST, then bring the staff to parade rest, <strong>and</strong> wait for<br />

the reviewing officer to take position.<br />

(4) If at an evening review including "Retreat", after the comm<strong>and</strong><br />

has been presented to the comm<strong>and</strong>er of troops <strong>and</strong> has returned<br />

to order arms, the staff does not reverse to face the front.<br />

Instead, the comm<strong>and</strong>er of troops comm<strong>and</strong>s PRESENT, ARMS, then,<br />

when all troops are at present arms, comm<strong>and</strong>s SOUND RETREAT (or<br />

gives a prearranged signal to the b<strong>and</strong> or field music) at the<br />

time prescribed for evening colors. The bugles sound "Retreat"<br />

<strong>and</strong> the b<strong>and</strong> plays the "National Anthem" immediately afterwards.<br />

The flag is lowered during the "National Anthem" as prescribed<br />

in paragraph 16-3. The comm<strong>and</strong>er of troops <strong>and</strong> staff, who<br />

saluted immediately after the troops presented arms, face the<br />

formation throughout, then, after the last note of the "National<br />

Anthem" terminate their salutes <strong>and</strong> the comm<strong>and</strong>er of troops<br />

comm<strong>and</strong>s ORDER, ARMS. The staff is reversed as described above,<br />

<strong>and</strong> if appropriate, the comm<strong>and</strong>er of troops brings the comm<strong>and</strong><br />

to parade rest. The comm<strong>and</strong>er of troops faces the reviewing area<br />

<strong>and</strong> waits for the reviewing officer to take post (see paragraph<br />

13-6). (NOTE: To conduct retreat as part of an evening review,<br />

troops must be formed in sufficient time prior to sunset to<br />

permit the comm<strong>and</strong> to be presented <strong>and</strong> evening colors to be<br />

conducted at the proper time.)<br />

b. Forming for Large Reviews.<br />

(1) For reviews conducted by organizations larger than a regiment,<br />

such as a division, the same basic comm<strong>and</strong>s, procedures, <strong>and</strong><br />

sequence of events prescribed above for a battalion or<br />

regimental review apply.<br />

(2) Normally, in large reviews battalions <strong>and</strong> independent companies<br />

are in mass formation. Troop units take their positions on the<br />

line of troops prior to the "third"<br />
