16-2. SALUTES<br />
a. By the National Color (St<strong>and</strong>ard).<br />
The national color (st<strong>and</strong>ard) renders no salute.<br />
b. By the Organizational Color.<br />
In military <strong>ceremonies</strong>, the organizational color salutes while<br />
the "National Anthem," "To the Color," or "Retreat" (played in<br />
lieu of the "National Anthem" in the absence or a b<strong>and</strong>), or "Hail<br />
to the Chief" is being played, <strong>and</strong> when rendering honors to the<br />
organizational comm<strong>and</strong>er or individual or higher rank, but in no<br />
other case. When marching, this salute is rendered when 6 paces<br />
from the reviewing st<strong>and</strong> or person to be saluted. Carry color is<br />
resumed when 6 paces beyond the reviewing st<strong>and</strong> or person to be<br />
saluted.<br />
c. By the Organizational St<strong>and</strong>ard.<br />
The organizational st<strong>and</strong>ard renders no salute.<br />
d. Salutes to the National Flag.<br />
Salutes are rendered to the national flag in accordance with U.S.<br />
Navy Regulations <strong>and</strong> chapter 18 to this <strong>manual</strong>.<br />
16-3. HOISTING, LOWERING, AND FOLDING THE NATIONAL ENSIGN<br />
a. General.<br />
(1) The ceremonial hoisting <strong>and</strong> lowering or the national ensign at<br />
0800 <strong>and</strong> sunset, respectively, shall be accomplished ashore in<br />
accordance with the provisions or U.S. Navy Regulations <strong>and</strong><br />
this paragraph.<br />
(2) A detail consisting of a noncommissioned officer <strong>and</strong> two<br />
nonrated men of the guard will hoist <strong>and</strong> lower the ensign.<br />
This detail will be armed with sidearms, it the special<br />
equipment of the guard includes sidearms; otherwise, the pistol<br />
belt only will be worn.<br />
(3) The comm<strong>and</strong>er of the guard ashore will see that the proper<br />
ensign is flown at the appropriate time <strong>and</strong> under all weather<br />
conditions. For different types or ensigns, see figure 16-1.<br />

Flag Manual. Any member or the guard who observes any hazard<br />
to the ensign such as loosened halyards, fouling, etc., will<br />
immediately report them to the comm<strong>and</strong>er of the guard.<br />
