feeding was observed (Salsbury 1984). Nothing else is recorded<br />

concerning the biology or life history <strong>of</strong> this species. Kissinger (1968)<br />

designated the lectotypes <strong>of</strong> A. pennsyluanicum and A. erythrocerum.<br />

Description. Length 2.5-3.0 mm. Body robust, black'<br />

Pubescence consisting <strong>of</strong> inconspicuous, very fine white scales' Frons<br />

LL-1.2 times wider than dorsal tip <strong>of</strong> rostrum; median area wide,<br />

bearing a shallow depression and 1 lateral line <strong>of</strong>punctures. Rostrum <strong>of</strong><br />

male slightly curved, I.2-I.4 times longer than pronotum; sides, in<br />

dorsal view, moderately expanded at antennal insertion, narrowing to<br />

middle; apical half nearly cylindrical; surface moderately punctured<br />

throughout, finely alutaceous. Rostrum <strong>of</strong> female L.4-I.5 times longer<br />

than pronotum, similar to male rostrum but more slender and with<br />

sparser and finer punctures. Antennae inserted between basal 0'2 and<br />

0.3 <strong>of</strong> rostrum. Eyes prominent, nearly round. Pronotum at base l'2-L.4<br />

times as wide as long; sides moderately expanded at base, slightly<br />

arcuate to middle, rounded to constricted apex; disc slightly and evenly<br />

convex, with deep punctures; interpuncture spaces irregular,<br />

alutaceous. Elytra !.2-L.3 times longer than wide; striae deep, with<br />

coarse punctures; interstriae strongly convex, slightly wider than<br />

striae, each interstria with 1 row <strong>of</strong> moderate punctures bearing<br />

inconspicuous scales; interstria 9 with 1 long specialized seta. Tibiae <strong>of</strong><br />

male middle and hind legs with slender dentate mucrones.<br />

Distribution. Ontario, south through the eastern United States<br />

to northern Mississippi, and east to Iowa. Ontario: Prince Edward<br />

County.<br />

Comments. This species belongs to the subgenus Trichapion;<br />

adults are similar to those <strong>of</strong> A. reconditum and A. centrale, but they<br />

differ by the strongly convex elytral interstriae and the deeply<br />

impressed striae. Nothing is known <strong>of</strong> the life history or biolog5', except<br />

that adults are most frequently found in May and June and occur on<br />

black locust (Robinicr pseudoacaclo). The larval host is unknown.<br />
