antennae The paired, segmented sensory organs, borne one on each<br />
side <strong>of</strong> the head or rostrum.<br />
antennal club The termal or distal segments (usually 3 and <strong>of</strong>ten<br />
enlarged) <strong>of</strong> the antenna.<br />
carina (pl. carinae) An elevated ridge or keel; may be weakly to<br />
strongly elevated.<br />
coxa (pl. coxae) The basal segment <strong>of</strong> the leg, by which it is attached<br />
to the body.<br />
disc The central upper surface <strong>of</strong> any part; in Curculionoidea usually<br />
refers to the central portion <strong>of</strong>the pronotum or elytra.<br />
dorsum Referring to the upper surface.<br />
el5rtra The anterior chitinous wings <strong>of</strong> Coleoptera, serving as<br />
coverings to the hind wings and meeting in a straight line down the<br />
middle <strong>of</strong> the dorsum in repose.<br />
epipleura (pl. epipleuron) The deflexed or inflexed portion <strong>of</strong> the<br />
elytra, immediately below the edge; the entire bent-under margin <strong>of</strong><br />
the elytra.<br />
epipleural carina An elevated ridge marking the margin <strong>of</strong> the<br />
epipleura.<br />
episternum The anterior and larger thoracic sclerite between the<br />
sternum (ventral region) and the notum (dorsal region).<br />
epistomal margin The usually elevated lower border <strong>of</strong> the head<br />
above the mandibles.<br />
femur (pl. femora) The third major segment <strong>of</strong> the leg, usually the<br />
stoutest segment, bearing the tibia at its distal end.<br />
frons That portion <strong>of</strong> the head generally between the eyes.<br />
geniculate Abruptly bent in an obtuse angle.<br />
gular Of or pertaining to the underside <strong>of</strong> the head or gula.<br />
gular suture(s) A single or double line on the underside <strong>of</strong> the head<br />
in Curculionoidea, indicating the joining <strong>of</strong> the genae or cheeks.<br />
humerus (pl. humeri) The basal exterior angle <strong>of</strong> the elytra,<br />
frequently elevated or produced, absent in wingless forms.<br />
integument The cuticle <strong>of</strong> the insect body.<br />
interstria (pl. interstriae) The longitudinal space between two<br />
stria.<br />
