Description. Length 5.5-7.0 mm (head excluded). Body pubescent;<br />
pubescence patterned as follows: setae on frons and rostrum either all<br />
light brown or white with few light brown setae at middle at upper level<br />
<strong>of</strong> eyes; setae on pronotum and elytra light brown, dark brown, and<br />
white, intermixed in various combinations, usually with spots as<br />
follows: pronotal disc with 2 dark brown spots on lateral-basal portion<br />
and 1 light brown patch basally; elytral disc with 1 large white patch on<br />
anterior portion; elytral interstriae with numerous dark brown, white,<br />
and light brown patches. Frons convex, with prominent, weakly<br />
elevated median carina extending from epistomal margin to level <strong>of</strong><br />
middle <strong>of</strong> eyes; surface <strong>of</strong> frons obscured by pubescence. Pronotum<br />
about I.I-L? times wider than long, widest at base; sides converging to<br />
narrowly rounded anterior margin; base broadly emarginate; basal<br />
carina acute; lateral carina acute, joining basal carina at about 80"<br />
angle; disc convex, with medial and basal impressions; basal impression<br />
deep; median impression broad, weak, longitudinal; surface strongly<br />
punctured, reticulate between punctures, usually obscured by<br />
abundant vestiture. Elytra L6-1.7 times longer than wide; apex broadly<br />
rounded; disc weakly impressed along suture, more distinctly impressed<br />
over declivity; striae weakly impressed; strial punctures shallow,<br />
moderate to large. Pygidium vertical; apex broadly rounded in both<br />
SEXES.<br />
Distribution. New Brunswick to Manitoba, throughout the<br />
eastern United States south to Florida and Texas. Manitoba: Aweme.<br />
New Brunswick: Bathurst. Ontario: Arnprior, St. Williams, Bells Corners,<br />
Chaffeys Locks, Chalk River, Constance Bay, DeCew Falls, Dunrobin,<br />
Grand Bend, Leamington, Marmora, Merivale, Normandale, Ojibway,<br />
Osgoode, Ottawa, Perth, Prince Edward County, Rondeau Park,<br />
Spencerville, Strathroy, and Turkey Point. Quebec: Aylmer, Duparquet,<br />
Fort Coulonge, Harrington Lake (Gatineau Park), Hemmingford,<br />
Laniel, and Wakefreld.<br />
Comments. This is one <strong>of</strong> the largest species (in body size) <strong>of</strong><br />
Anthribidae occurring in <strong>Canada</strong>. Adults may be easily recognized by<br />
the color pattern <strong>of</strong>the setae, by the characters as given above, and by<br />
the large size. Although the species is common throughout its range,<br />
