Genus Eugnamptus Schoenherr<br />

This is a relatively large genus, with most species occurring in<br />
Mexico and Central America. One species occurs in <strong>Canada</strong>. Some<br />
species in this genus mine leaves <strong>of</strong> various hardwoods; others feed in<br />
buds. fruits. and nuts.<br />
Description. Body small (3.7 mm long or less), dark. Legs usually<br />
lighter than body. Pubescence conspicuous; setae fine, erect, hair-like.<br />
Head elongate, widest across eyes, constricted behind eyes; surface<br />
shining, finely punctured. Rostrum elongate, longer in female, quadrate<br />
between eyes and antennal insertion; apex weakly expanded; mandible<br />
with 1 (male) or 2 (female) teeth on outer margin. Eyes strongly convex,<br />
protuberant (Fig. 149). Antennae (Fig. 149) inserted midway between<br />
eye and apex <strong>of</strong> rostrum, with terminal 3 segments much longer than<br />
other segments. Pronotum longer than wide, narrower than base <strong>of</strong><br />
elytra; disc shining, moderately punctured. Elytra with sides parallel;<br />
apex broadly rounded; striae in distinct rows, with distinct punctures;<br />
interstriae minutely punctured. Abdomen not noticeably sexually<br />
dimorphic.<br />

Comments. Hamilton (1969. 1990) revised the North American<br />
species <strong>of</strong>this genus.<br />
