Description. Length 4.0-6.8 mm. Integument reddish brown,<br />

rarely dark reddish brown to nearly black. Pubescence consisting <strong>of</strong><br />

abundant white to pale yellow setae. Head slightly narrowed from base<br />

to eyes; median carina slightly elevated, longitudinal, extending from<br />

vertex to level <strong>of</strong>middle <strong>of</strong>eye; surface <strong>of</strong>head strongly punctured below<br />

median carina. Rostrum shorter than head, constricted at antennal<br />

insertion; apex broadly expanded, about twice as wide as frons; lateral<br />

apical angles with a blunt tooth. Antennae inserted dorsolaterally at<br />

basal third <strong>of</strong> rostrum. Pronotum 1.3 times wider than long, widest at<br />

base; sides strongly arcuate, converging to recurved anterior margin;<br />

disc convex, with distinct, round impression on median lateral area;<br />

surface with large, dense, moderately deep punctures. Elytra (measured<br />

along suture) as long as wide, at base 1.3-1.4 times wider than<br />

pronotum; apex broadly rounded; striae shallowly impressed,<br />

inconspicuous, sometimes discernible laterally or toward apex, with<br />

moderately large, moderately deeply impressed punctures; interstriae<br />

rugose, weakly elevated, with scattered fine points; setae abundant,<br />

short. recumbent. curved.<br />

Distribution. Nova Scotia to Manitoba, south through the<br />

eastern United States to Virginia and Tennessee, west to Wisconsin,<br />

Kansas, and Nebraska. A population thought to be this species occurs in<br />

the southwestern United States. Manitoba: Aweme, Baldur, Carberry,<br />

Horton, Ninette, Riding Mountain National Park, 8 km southwest <strong>of</strong><br />

Shilo, and Winnipeg. New Brunswick: Bathurst, Boiestown,<br />

Fredericton, and Penobsquis. Nova Scotia: Port Medway. Ontario:<br />

Addington, Bobcaygeon, Gravenhurst, Hastings, Hearst (not on map),<br />

La Salle, Merivale, Ottawa, Paris, Renfrew, Roseland, South March,<br />

Tillsonberg, Toronto, Wagarville, and Walsingham. Quebec: Compton<br />

(Mount Megantic), Duparquet, Farm Point, Saint-Joseph-de-Kamouraska,<br />

and Trois-Rividres.<br />

Comments. Adults <strong>of</strong> this species are easily recognized, since this<br />

is the only species in this family in <strong>Canada</strong> that is thoroughly pubescent.<br />

Nothing concerning the biology <strong>of</strong>this species has been recorded except<br />

that adults have been recorded rolling leaves <strong>of</strong> hazelnut (Corylus<br />
