Background plants are important for rounding out an aquarium aquascape.<br />

These plants can also help cover up unsightly filter tubes, airline tubing, and<br />

heaters in the rear of the tank. A spreading background plant that is placed in<br />

the front corner of a tank can also add an interesting aspect to the scene.<br />

Experiment and see what looks good to you!<br />

Hornwort (CeratopHyllum demersum)<br />

Hornwort (Figure 17-2) is one of the most popular aquarium plants on the<br />

market. It does not have real roots, but can be planted in gravel. This fastgrowing,<br />

beautiful plant has green featherlike appendages that reach skyward<br />

like upside down umbrellas waiting to catch the rain.
