Route 68. As <strong>the</strong> division's combat<br />

commands approached <strong>the</strong> road on <strong>the</strong><br />

30th, sharp resistance, mainly from <strong>the</strong><br />

3d Panzer Grenadier Division and newly<br />

arrived elements of <strong>the</strong> 90th Panzer<br />

Grenadier Division, ensconced on <strong>the</strong><br />

high ground along <strong>the</strong> road, brought<br />

<strong>the</strong> armor temporarily <strong>to</strong> a halt. 23<br />

Faced with evidence of German reinforcement,<br />

<strong>the</strong> 34th Division commander,<br />

General Rvder, decided <strong>to</strong> use<br />

his reserve, <strong>the</strong> 135rh Infantry, <strong>to</strong> swing<br />

<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> east in an effort <strong>to</strong> envelop what<br />

appeared <strong>to</strong> be <strong>the</strong> strongest defenses<br />

along <strong>the</strong> coast south of <strong>the</strong> <strong>to</strong>wn of<br />

Cecina. The regiment was first <strong>to</strong> relieve<br />

<strong>the</strong> attached 442d Infantrv, <strong>the</strong>n<br />

move along a ridge three miles'inland<br />

that overlooked <strong>the</strong> coastal corridor and<br />

prepare <strong>to</strong> cross <strong>the</strong> Cecina f
