II Corps. That was all <strong>the</strong> corps could<br />

hope <strong>to</strong> accomplish, for after losing <strong>the</strong><br />

6th South African Armoured Division<br />

and <strong>the</strong> 1st Armored Division's CCB <strong>to</strong><br />

army control, <strong>the</strong> corps had a strength<br />

of little more than a reinforced division.<br />

The Persannel Problem<br />

In mid-Oc<strong>to</strong>ber <strong>the</strong> prospect loomed<br />

ever larger that un redeemed battle<br />

losses would ultimately bring both <strong>the</strong><br />

Fifth and Eighth armies <strong>to</strong> a halt.<br />

During <strong>the</strong> six days from 10 through<br />

15 Oc<strong>to</strong>ber, for example, <strong>the</strong> four<br />

infantry divisions of <strong>the</strong> II Corps sustained<br />

2,491 casualties. When combined<br />

with even larger losses of <strong>the</strong> first nine<br />

days of <strong>the</strong> month, <strong>the</strong> prospects for<br />

<strong>the</strong> future were disturbing. While some<br />

of <strong>the</strong> losses could be made up by men<br />

returning <strong>to</strong> duty from hospitals and by<br />

replacements trickling in<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ater,<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ater's replacement pool that had<br />

served so well since <strong>the</strong> beginning of
