RAINFED RICE A SOURCEBOOK OF BEST PRACTICES AND STRATEGIES IN EASTERN INDIA<br />

<strong>Rice</strong> in eastern India<br />

Eastern India includes the states of West Bengal, Orissa, Bihar, Assam,<br />

eastern Uttar Pradesh and eastern Madhya Pradesh. It is the most important<br />

<strong>rice</strong>-growing and -consuming area in India. Although 35% of the people live<br />

in this region, their demand is about 49% of the <strong>rice</strong> grown in the country.<br />

The annual per capita <strong>rice</strong> consumption in this region is 133 kg versus 37 kg<br />

in the western region, 39 kg in the northern region and 113 kg in the<br />

southern region. Eastern India cultivates 51.3% of the area under <strong>rice</strong> in the<br />

whole country and produces 45% of the total production needs.<br />
