Principles for Improving and
Stabilising Crop Yields

he average yield of upland rice is 0.8 t/ha and 1.5 t/ha for lowland
rice. These yields are far below the yield of irrigated rice (2.5 t/ha)
and the national average (1.9 t/ha).
Addressing these issues is highly pertinent in the context of systems
performance, farmer income and broadening of the resource base. The basic
requirements for improving rainfed rice are:
Varietal improvement
Water management
Pest management
Soil and nutrient management
If the above factors are taken care of, the country can fulfill its future food
requirement.
