Boro <strong>Rice</strong> Cultivation<br />

B<br />

oro <strong>rice</strong> cultivation is a special system of <strong>rice</strong> cultivation in waterlogged<br />

low-lying or medium land areas with irrigation during November to<br />

May. The Boro <strong>rice</strong> system takes advantage of:<br />

residual moisture in lands after the harvest of kharif paddy;<br />

longer moisture retention capacity of the soil; and<br />

surface water stored in nearby low-lying ditches, areas adjoining canals,<br />

roads, chaur lands, etc.<br />

Traditionally, Boro <strong>rice</strong> was cultivated in river basin deltas where water<br />

accumulated during monsoons and could not be drained out in the winter<br />

months. The system of Boro <strong>rice</strong> cultivation has been an age-old tradition in<br />

Bangladesh and eastern India and is now spreading fast even outside<br />

traditional areas where irrigation is assured.<br />

Boro <strong>rice</strong> is known for high productivity (5-6 t/ha) in deepwater areas of<br />

eastern India, where productivity has traditionally been very poor (
