KERMIT ROOSEVELT was the head of the CIA's Near East Division in 1953. Roosevelt, the
grandson of former U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt, was tasked by Secretary of State John
Foster Dulles and CIA Director Allen Dulles with carrying out the plan to depose Mossadeq
and replace him with the Shah. In his 1979 book on the operation, Roosevelt wrote that, upon
taking power, the Shah said: '"I owe my throne to God, my people, my army and to you!' By 'you'
[the Shah] meant me and the two countries—Great Britain and the United Sates—I was
representing. We were all heroes."
